What could I possibly write about? There are many things on my mind when it comes to my personal expression in an essay. I was looking into topics that I’m interested in, topics that I like to talk about. I already wrote a whole article about rock climbing, so I guess I can rule that out. I’m really looking to mix it up and make it a little more exciting. This brainstorming will mostly result with me asking a lot of “what if” questions. Good thing that’s what you’re asking yourself as well.
What if I wrote about my experience in college? Now this could spiral into so many different topics in itself. This could range from my academic experience to my social experience or so much more. I can even write about this year alone or how crazy and unpredictable it has been. I can go on and on with so many different stories and experiences that would provide me with such an excellent format for my essay. I can even go on to talk about all the clubs and groups I joined and how all the experiences they provided me with changed my life in so many ways. I can talk about my friends that I became so close with over the years in college and how I share so many memories with each and every one of them. This would provide me with so many different outlets to write.
What if I wrote about favorite music? I can write about my favorite genres or artists. I can go into my favorite instruments to hear and what I expect from the vocals. After all of which I am extremely picky with my music. I can even talk about the concerts I’ve been to and how each live performance blew me away and inspired me to listen to even more music in different settings. The reader will be so interested in the different music tastes I have and how diverse they really are.
What if I wrote about cooking? Over the last few years I’ve become really interested in home cooking and learning different recipes and techniques. I can go into all the different styles of dishes I’ve made and the ones I still want to try. I have so many different tips I can share and seasoning I can recommend that will add flavor to any dish. Lately I’ve been experimenting with different national cuisines, each of which working with so many diverse and different spices. I could go into how each spice changes the dynamic flavor of each dish while complementing it’s different ingredients.
With so many different topics to choose from I’ll have to take more time to really decide how I want to express myself. With so many completely different outlets of expression I have so many exciting options. Ultimately, I want this to be the most exciting for my audience, so that I something that I’m taking into consideration. I can’t wait to make a choice

Hello Bernardo,
ReplyDeleteI cannot wait for you to make a choice either! All of your options sound very interesting and I think they would make great material for a personal essay. But I would not focus too much on simply choosing a topic that is interesting to the reader. This is a personal essay after all. I think it is equally important for it to be written with you and the audience in mind. When I was narrowing down my choices, I ultimately chose the one that I had the deepest personal connection to and I thought that my audience would be able to relate to as well. Some topics were a bit too personal, others were interesting but I did not feel the same passion to write about them as different topics.
So, which of these topics has the deepest personal connection to you, that you would be willing to share? From your short explorations above, I think writing about what your college experience meant to you would be intriguing and relatable to a wide audience but also something you are passionate about.
What did your college experience mean to you?
What did you clubs and communities mean to you? your friends?
How did you grow and change? how is this significant? how will this impact your future?
How do you feel about how it is ending? why do you think you feel this way?
Just some notes, hope they are helpful in some way! even if you choose another topic!
Maria
Hi Bernardo!
ReplyDeleteI too had difficulty with what exactly I was going to write about, and to be honest I haven't fully made that decision yet. I think that when choosing the topic it is best to go with something you can write on and on about and making it personal to the audience and a meaningful piece to yourself that you can look back on and see your growth that you have made from that time. From what you have written I see a lot of passion and I am intrigued by what you have learned in your years from college and I think that the audience that this is targeted to would be as well, but any topic would be great to write about!!
Happy writing!!
Darby
